Low Back Pain

A holistic and effective approach to end your pain

Understanding Low Back Pain from a Chinese Medicine Perspective

At our clinic, we successfully treat thousands of patients suffering from low back pain every year, whether the pain is mild or completely debilitating. Acupuncture for low back pain has been used for thousands of years, providing long-term relief and restoring mobility. Treatment may involve local acupuncture points in the lower back or points throughout the body, depending on the root cause of the pain.

Many times, low back pain stems from underlying imbalances in the body that must be addressed before true healing can occur. Our practitioners take a comprehensive approach, using movement assessments, pulse and tongue diagnosis, palpation, and detailed health history evaluations to determine the best course of action. In some cases, tightness or stagnation in other areas, such as the neck, shoulders, upper back, or legs, may be contributing to the pain.

The length of treatment varies depending on whether the pain is acute or chronic. On average, low back pain relief occurs within 3 to 10 acupuncture sessions, though chronic cases—especially those persisting for over a decade—may require additional care.

What Causes Low Back Pain?

Low back pain can arise from a variety of factors, including degeneration or subluxation of the lumbar spine, muscle tightness and tension in the lower back, hamstrings, calves, quads, or neck, as well as sciatica or nerve compression. It can also result from injuries due to lifting, poor posture, or repetitive strain. Stress, inflammation, and poor circulation can also play a role in the development of chronic pain.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, low back pain is often linked to Qi and Blood stagnation, Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency, or Cold and Dampness in the sinew channels. These imbalances can contribute to pain, stiffness, and limited mobility, making it essential to treat both the symptoms and the underlying causes.

How Acupuncture Treats Low Back Pain

Acupuncture for Pain Relief and Healing

Our approach to acupuncture for low back pain is tailored to each patient’s unique condition. Treatment may involve local acupuncture points in the lower back to increase circulation and reduce inflammation, while distal acupuncture points on the hands, feet, and legs help balance the meridians and improve energy flow. If the pain is acute, treatment may focus on the Sinew Channels, which are responsible for muscle tension and mobility. For chronic pain or conditions such as disk degeneration or scoliosis, the Bladder Divergent Channel may be used to support structural integrity and deeper tissue healing.

Electroacupuncture (E-Stim) for Low Back Pain

For severe or chronic cases, electroacupuncture (E-Stim) may be incorporated to enhance results. This technique sends mild electrical currents through the acupuncture needles, stimulating the body’s natural healing response, improving circulation, and relaxing tight muscles. Many patients experience faster and more effective pain relief when E-Stim is combined with traditional acupuncture techniques.

Additional Therapies for Low Back Pain

Alongside acupuncture, we integrate additional therapies to speed up recovery and enhance pain relief. Cupping therapy is used to release muscle tension and improve blood circulation in the affected areas. Gua Sha is another effective method for breaking up stagnation and promoting healing. Manual therapy and intuitive bodywork help realign the musculoskeletal system, providing relief from both acute and chronic pain. Herbal medicine is also an essential component of treatment, nourishing the Kidneys, reducing inflammation, and improving overall healing.

By combining acupuncture, cupping, and herbal medicine, we create a holistic treatment plan that targets both the symptoms and root causes of low back pain.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

Many patients begin to feel relief within 4-6 acupuncture sessions, with significant improvements typically occurring after 3 months of weekly treatments. As symptoms subside, treatment frequency can be reduced to biweekly or monthly sessions for maintenance.

For those suffering from severe spinal degeneration, sciatica, or herniated discs, the healing process may take longer, but gradual improvements in pain reduction, mobility, and overall well-being can still be achieved with consistent care.
